BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE THERAPY

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a prescription alternative to conventional hormone replacement therapy (conjugated estrogens, medroxyprogesterone, etc.). Bioidentical medications are plant-derived, and extracted in a laboratory until they are identical to what your body would naturally produce. BHRT is customized for each individual and their personal needs. It can be adjusted to fit your needs, unlike conventional HRT, which has a few standard dosage strengths and must be attended to each day.  Whereas BHRT is a constant source of hormones for when your body needs them.

What are the goals of BHRT?

To help alleviate symptoms caused by the natural decrease in hormone production in the body and to work towards reestablishing the individual's hormonal balance.

How do I know if I need BHRT?

Typical symptoms for females include hot flashes, poor sleep, weight gain, bouts of depression, mood swings, osteopenia or osteoarthritis, poor libido, decreased energy. For men symptoms are decreased strength/energy, decreased muscle mass, poor sleep, poor libido, weight gain.

What about costs for the labs?

You can come to our office or go to any laboratory to have your blood drawn.  Sometimes these labs can be billed to your insurance company. Please contact your insurance company to see what may be covered. We have arranged special pricing for our patients with Lab Corp for those with high deductibles or no insurance. Out of pocket costs for one lab draw is $200.

How are the pellets administered?

A small incision will be made at the upper part of your hip or back after a local anesthetic has been given. A trocar will be placed in the incision into the fatty tissue. This device will allow pellets to be placed in the subcutaneous tissue where they will be gradually absorbed by your body over several months. A small dressing will be applied after the trocar is removed.

Are there any restrictions?

You will need to avoid any heavy lifting or soaking in a bath tub/swimming pool for at least 5 days after the procedure, then you can resume any activities you like.
